I don’t get a lot of time to go on vacation. I work a full time job, I work on my photography business for another full time job, my weekends are packed full this year without another break until October! We had 2 Vacation trips this summer and those have been my only true days off. One was our trip to Seattle. (Where I still second shot 2 weddings, so is it really a break?) And today is the second trip.

It is no secret that I love to camp. So Trevor got major bonus points when surprised me for my birthday with a new tent and reservations at a campground in Yellowstone. I know he loves me when he does things like this because he is not a big camper. When Trevor does something though, he goes at it 100%. So when he was buying a tent, it wasn’t like he was just going to go down to your local REI and get whatever 4 person tent looked good. Oh no. Not Trevor. He got on thewirecutter.com to find the BEST tent of all time. (This is totally a Trevor move.)

I wish I was exaggerating, but our tent is literally the best tent ever. It takes 3 MINUTES to set up. I’m not joking. See for yourself.

Yellowstone is about a 5 hour drive. It is gorgeous. It is refreshing. It is calming. I loved every minute of this trip. I *might* have even shed a tear or two when we were leaving the park. Life gets busy. We are proud of being busy.  We enjoy being busy. But the weekends Trevor and I take to slow down and ground ourselves, the haze of “busy” seems to clear away. We realize more and more how spending quality time together continues to strengthen our marriage and make beautiful memories. Our trips don’t have to be fancy or elaborate. Just heartfelt and real. Time away (without much cell service) in Yellowstone was just what the doctor ordered.

We went to the park over Memorial Day weekend in May. Yes there was still snow on the ground in some parts of the park. It made the nights a little chilly but made the days PERFECT temperature for hiking and walking around.  We packed and was prepared for the chilly nights. What we were not prepared for was snow in our fire pit. That took some creative engineering to get a fire started in the pit.

As a Bride, I knew I needed flowers for my bridal party. But beyond that I was a little clueless. I was in Utah planning a wedding and finishing up my last semester of school, my mother was in Texas and Trevor was in California working full time as an accountant. What is a Bride to do when her mother and fiancé are more than a 16 hours drive away and planning a wedding??

Panic. That is what I did.

I ended up finding the flower shop that my family had used to order flowers for my grandmothers funeral a few years back. I should have known that a shop that makes funeral flowers might not be the best place to order wedding flowers. The only reason I went with this shop was because I had NO OTHER IDEA how to find florals. I wasn’t on Pinterest, I didn’t know what I wanted.

I walked in to my bridal appointment and told a young girl behind the counter my wedding colors of dark purple and mustard yellow. I am pretty sure this girl was working her after school job and somehow I was trusting her and this with my wedding flowers?

Luckily I had a bouquet that I didn’t hate, but I missed out on the experience that a artisan wedding florist could have provided me. I needed a wonderful wedding florist that could help to educate me on how flowers could make a difference for my day and what flowers were in season with my color palette.  I craved feeling like a bride while planning my wedding virtually alone and a specialized wedding florist could have done exactly that.

So today, I wanted to introduce to you all a dear friend of mine who is the florist I wish I had in 2011!

Sarah Asay, with Blushing Rose Event Florals is incredibly talented. I spent an evening with her as she made a bridal bouquet full of beautiful garden roses, white dahlias, lavender roses and white lace ribbons.  I am stunned how she made this before my eyes. We started with buckets of beautiful long stemmed flowers and by the end of the evening a beautiful bouquet was sitting before me.

It takes a lot of time in creating a bouquet. And this is just ONE bouquet. For a wedding day there is a lot more work. You have boutonnieres, corsages, bridesmaids bouquets, bridal bouquet, cake flowers and table centerpieces. Often times there are flowers incorporated into a ceremony arch and backdrops. They add so much to a wedding day in regards to your style and themes!

Sarah is one of my preferred vendors that I love to work with. She is smart, easy to work with, insanely talented and understands the needs of a Bride! I love to recommend Blushing Rose Event Florals and know I can trust her to always deliver beautiful work.

As I watched her work I was able to ask her a few questions about herself and her business.

Why did you want to get into flowers?
When I was a little girl I would watch my dad arrange flowers from our garden for my grandma. Not only did the arrangements add to the beauty of her home, but they made her feel special. I started my own floral design business when I realized that I can also use flowers to share love and happiness with others.

What is your background?
My background in horticulture plays a huge part into my role as a florist. It’s not just my love for flowers that sets me apart, but I’ve studied plants, I’ve cared for plants, I know how they grow, and I understand why they do the crazy things they do. Because of this, I know how to use each stem effectively in an arrangement, I know what your flowers will do in different venues, and I know why certain flowers and greens look good together.(Note from Breanna: Sarah and I talked a lot about her background that helped develop her creativity too. She has done more a lot to cultivate her creativity. She has dabbled in graphic design and is a great photographer herself! (Guys, she is good!) She has been actively involved in music from when she was little while playing the violin. I feel like she is full of creativity that is constantly finding new ways of expression and service. Sarah has a genuine heart to help serve others around her. Truly amazing and has a heart of gold.)

How can florals add to a wedding experience?
It’s safe to say that fresh flowers evoke feelings of appreciation, love, and romance. Using flowers in your wedding decor adds that final touch of emotion to bring every part of your special day together. I love when brides go beyond just the bouquet and centerpieces by adding a fresh flower garland, floral crown, wreath, or any other floral accents; there are so many beautiful and creative things that can be done with flowers!

What do you love most in life/whats important to you?
Serving and loving others is one of the most important things in life. Again, that’s one reason I started doing flowers. I get such satisfaction from helping others feel special, beautiful, and loved through my job as a florist. I love to create and add beauty to the world while (hopefully) uplifting others.

What inspires you?
A lot of my inspiration comes from nature. When you look at a field of wildflowers or a lush mountainside, the vegetation has no set pattern but it’s perfect.

How do you want your brides to feel on their wedding day?
I hope my brides feel that same, incredible, overwhelming love that I felt on my wedding day. I hope they soak in every moment and feel peace.

If you could change something about your wedding day, what would you change?
I would do a whole lot less DIY. Seriously, find vendors you trust and leave all the stress to them. (I AGREE 100% Sarah!)

What is something unique about you?

Maiden name Rose. It’s kind of fitting 😉

What do you remember from your own wedding day?

The overwhelming feeling of love from my new husband and all our friends and family who celebrated with us that day.

Give us a glimpse into a “day in the life of Sarah”
A day in the life of Sarah is nothing too glamorous – I spend my days getting dirty and working in the greenhouse and my evenings are spent enjoying life with my husband. The days preparing for a wedding are full of the sweetest smells, the prettiest blooms, and the messiest floors. You get poked by a thorn every once in a while, but being a wedding florist has to be the loveliest job out there.
What is something you have been loving lately?
I’m loving Vampire Weekend right now – their Pandora station is almost always playing while I work.

I have loved getting to know Brittanie and Shaun. They are a couple that just seem to fit together seamlessly.  It might be that they have been together for 5+ years and truly know each other. It might be all of the little acts of love that they do so effortlessly.  Or it could be their joint passion to have fun and make their wedding celebrations exciting! Their wedding is one that I am really looking forward to! Just talking to these two about their wedding day, you can tell how much they want to plan a reception that will be fun and entertaining for their guests! A true celebration!

Shaun completely surprised Brittanie when he purposed. Yes, like most couples they had been talking about getting married, they knew it was coming. But it was the “when and the where” that completely took his bride to be off guard.

When you are <–this–> close to being engaged, you almost start speculating if everything little cute thing he does is leading up to THE question. You start thinking to yourself, “This is a nice date night, is tonight the night?”, “He brought me flowers for what seems like no reason at all, he is going to finally ask?”  It can be hard to truly make an engagement a surprise with a bride running with speculations like this!

So when Brittanie’s birthday came around, OF COURSE she will start to speculate if Shaun was going to purpose that day. But if you want the engagement to be a surprise, and you are planning on purposing on a birthday, then you better believe that you have to have a well thought out, well executed plan.

Everyone loves Brittanie! (Me included!) So it wasn’t hard for Shaun to round up some of her best friends at Benihana for dinner for a birthday dinner party! That is all this was going to be. A “Birthday Dinner”. Not even their friends that were gathered around knew how big this night was going to be.

Shaun had gone to the restaurant earlier that day to talk to the manager about his plan of purposing to Brittanie. He gave the manager the ring box and told him to bring it out after they ate. Brilliant idea too! Curious girls like Brittanie go to lengths to search for rings! Curious if she would get a ring from Shaun for her brithday, she even checked his pockets to see if he was carrying a ringbox! Good thing Shaun knows her well and planned ahead!

With no sign of a box, Brittanie told herself that the night was just going to be a fantastically fun birthday dinner. And that is the way the dinner went. Until the server came out with a sparking ring and caught everyone’s breath away. You can image the cheers that came from the restaurant when Shaun purposed. Their friends were close by were surprised, Brittanie was shocked, and everyone celebrated!

I always love shooting at the Utah State Capitol but today was something special. It was bright and beautiful inside the rotunda even though outside was a dust storm!

Planning a wedding is not always easy. In fact, rarely is it “easy”.  When I was a bride, the best and most reliable way that I found my florist, hair and makeup artist, photographer, etc. etc.  was all through referrals and other vendors!

There are a few things that I would change about my wedding if I could go back and do it again. Not that I didn’t have a beautiful wedding day and I am so grateful for how lovley it was and how much help I had from friends and family. But now that I have been to over 75+ weddings, I can say that I have learned a thing or two about them. I know now how important you wedding music can be. It truly sets the mood of your reception and celebration! If you want people to get out on the dance floor and party, you are going to want a DJ or live band and not just an ipod on shuffle with a few top 40 hits.

This last month, I got to shoot with my friend Brooke Bakken at one of her weddings. (It will be on the blog soon.) The wedding was tucked in the hills of Park City and was full of charm. All of the music for the day was provided by Conn Curran. I have known about Conn for a while and was thrilled to see him and his band mates at the wedding. During the ceremony, the bride walked down the aisle as they sang. During cocktail hour, they captivated the guests and by time the dancing rolled around, everyone was ready to get on the feet! As the night progresses, they put down the instruments for all out DJ-ing.

They truly are the perfect group to add a beautiful elegance and jazz feel to any event.

You can go to their website to see more videos of them singing and at a variety of functions. You can’t go wrong with these guys and will recognize a lot of current songs being covered with a fabulous Conn Curran jazzy twist.

Refreshing. This place makes all the weight of your stress disappear with ease. Coupeville, Washington is home of some of the worlds most delicious mussels (you don’t have to ask me, you can ask Martha Stewart), sailing races, and art festivals. It sits on Whidbey Island which is engulfed in the Puget Sound about 80 miles north of Seattle, Washington.  The whole island is magical.

This week, my husband Trevor and I are in Seattle Washington. I am second shooting a few weddings with my good friend Lora Grady Photography, so Trevor and I decided to stay a little while after the weddings to make a vacation trip out of it. Since we are both small business owners, we do not get a lot of time to plan relaxing time together so a get away to Seattle seemed perfect during the busy summer.

It might be the ferry ride to the island where the fresh wind whips through your hair with locals and visitors chatting away happily on the open deck, but almost instantaneously life seems to slow down here. No more hustle and bustle. No more rushing. You have arrived and you are here to breath in the Pacific Northwest.

Coupeville was founded in 1852 by Captain Thomas Coupe, which makes it the second oldest town in the State of Washington. This fact is never far from your mind either. With over 300 structures on the Historic Registry, little date plaques nailed next to restaurant doors, and tongue and groove construction work are all markings that this little seascape is rich of history.

Little have I known, but for the last 10 years, my Aunt and Uncle (Becky and Dave) have been shopping around the Bed and Breakfast market. This has been their dreams. To work together and run  a B&B after they become empty nesters. A little less than 2 years ago, they sold their farm house in Colorado and bought the Blue Goose Inn Bed and Breakfast in Coupeville, Washington. It is hard to leave a town that you have raised your children in and make so many wonderful memories. But this was a dream and a fresh start that they have been planning on for years and it seems to fit them perfectly.

For example, My Aunt and cousin Collin (who helps when he is home from College) are WONDERFUL cooks. Our family is full of great cooks. I think it all comes from my Grandmother who enjoys creating wonderful meals as a way to bring together a family and passed that on to her 5 daughters. But the Blue Goose Inn’s kitchen is in good hands with Becky behind the menu and the availability of local produce from the island. They  make their own house maple-butter, cinnamon syrup, and a variety of  jams. And yes, those berries for the jams all come from the local farms! Your mouth will salivate just reading about what is cooking.

There are two houses that make up the Blue Goose Inn. The Pink Kineth House and the Blue Coupe House. Each house has rooms available ranging ins sizes and decore. Each room is historic and beautiful.

Over the last 2 years Dave and Becky have been renovating the rooms to make for beautiful upgrades that each of their guest will enjoy. This is just one of their rooms available, the Bell Tower Room.

They are 0.1 miles from the shoreline. Yes, less than a tenth of a mile! a 5 minute walk will get you the puget sound and scenes like this. I think I may never leave.

I can’t wait to share with you the weddings that Lora and I will be shooting this weekend in Seattle and on Whidbey Island. I know they are going to be romantic and whimsical. I will be excited to share them with you all, so stay tuned and watch for them on the blog. I truly wish you all could be here to see this island in person. I love taking pictures, but it is even more magical with your own eyes.
