There were nothing but smiles. When talking with Lindsey the week of her wedding, she seemed calmed, relax and just excited to get married.  (This was not the case for me a week before I got married, I was a roller coaster of emotions!). Andrew and Lindsey are pretty level headed and knew weather it rained or shined, they were getting married and that was the most important thing that was happening. Nothing in those final days before their wedding would stop that from happening and that fact along was going to make this day a perfect and beautiful day.

Right after Lindsey and Andrew’s ceremony, the family went to the Lion House on Temple Square to have a luncheon before the reception. The florals had sheet music wrapped around the vases to showcase how much music meant in Lindsey and Andrew’s life. Both are so very talented, and they sung together at the luncheon. It was a beautiful incorporation of who Lindsey and Andrew are as a couple and what makes them special.

Their reception was at Chantilly Mansion in Layton, Utah. It was a beautiful. With most LDS brides, we take the “getting ready” pictures right before the reception. These few moments of a bride with her mother and bridesmaids are wonderful moments. I don’t do this often. In fact I don’t think I have ever done this. But something struck a chord in me about my friend Kandis and her family situation and I felt like I should share it with other.

Kandis Broadhead is the owner of Wish Photography. If we are a photographer, you might recognize her name for her photoshop action store and photography retreats she does! No only is Kandis a great photographer, she is one of the most open, friendly, sharing and caring gals I know. I remember the first time meeting her, I walked away feeling like we had been friends for a long time. I felt comfortable around her and that I could be myself without any judgement or reserve.

The Utah Women Photography network of amazing and we have fun dinner events at different local restaurants to just see each other all again. This last event, I showed up just a tad late, walked into a dim restaurant and looked around to see who I knew there. It didn’t take long to spot Kandis. She was entertaining an entire group of fun photographers. She can make an entire room of people laugh.  She is one beautiful talented and “beautifully unpredictable” woman.Wish Photo
Because Kandis is always so happy and cheerful towards others,  you forget that she ever had a bad day. Or that she might have personal struggles and trials to deal with, like everyone else. So maybe that is why I was so surprised when I heard about what her family was going through. Her husband David has had a hearing impairment all of his life. His hearing aids help him connect with the world. Until recently, this is all they needed. The last little while David hearing became substantially worse. It became obvious very quickly that in order for David to continue to hear, he will need a cochlear implant. Doctors have estimated that David will be completely deaf by time he is 40 years old. He is 37 right now. That is a mere 3 years away. A cochlear implant operation is not covered by insurance because David is over the age of 18. After several petitions to their insurance company, they are still left with the same answer. If David wants to continue hearing, they will have to pay for the $75,000 operation themselves.

I don’t think I am even aware of all of the details of the world I would miss if I lost my hearing. Kandis explained a little bit of how this would effect their family soon in a recent Facebook post.

“Imagine if this was you or your spouse. That they would never be able to hear their children again. Or imagine if you were never able to hear the world around you. Listen to what you hear now. I am sure you hear little things, like the refrigerator clicking on, the radio, the tv, the sound of a car driving by outside, the sound of laughter, the sounds of I Love You’s, the sounds of the world. ”

Screen Shot 2014-09-08 at 7.59.28 AMPhoto from Kandis Broadhead

I feel strongly connected to  these women photographers in Utah. They have helped me start a business, they have taught me, they have not judged me. I feel like so many of these women are family to me! They are my older sisters, they are my younger cousins. I adore these girls! Kandis is no exception. You can see her beautiful family below. Friends have set up a GoFundMe.com account to help contribute to the cost of the cochlear implant operation. Feel free to share with others a little of their story. I know that giving back to those you love and even inspired to help those you don’t know brings a happiness into your own.

So honest confession. When I was getting married, there were very few things that I had a particular vision for. For example, I didn’t really care what my bridesmaids wore and I wasn’t set on a particular style at all. The first one dark purple dress I like, I had them all order it. (I choose a deep purple with little bits of yellow for our wedding colors. I thought the deep color of purple could look winter without being “Christmas”. Which was great for our December 16th wedding.)

There was a few things I DID care about. When I was the bride, I was picky about what I wanted my invitation to look like.  About half of my close college friends got married in the few years at school and I worked at a bridal salon as a part time job. Between those years and being a wedding photographer, I think it is safe to say I have seen HUNDREDS of wedding announcements and invitations.  I knew what looks I liked and what I didn’t.  This was the first thing my guests were seeing that would represent our wedding and I wanted it to be good.

It is such a treat to see my own BM Brides send me their invitations and see a little sneak peek of their wedding celebrations and themes. A good designed invitation and stationary is a fabulous sign of a wonderful, detail oriented celebration!

But, I’m not the expert on wedding stationary. Let me introduce you to my friend Jacki Miller with Jacki Miller Photo + Design. Jacki is an Arizona based wedding photographer and graphic designer. (Powerful combination there!) She has an eye for details and I have fallen in love with everything she makes. It can be the invitation itself, ceremony cards, or menus, it is all beautiful.

I wanted to let Jacki tell a little bit about herself and how your wedding stationary can make a difference for your big day.  All of the images are designs and stationary that Jacki has made. Those lucky brides! It is beautiful!

Hey! My name is Jacki Miller and I am a designer located in the sunny state of Arizona! I am super thrilled that Breanna asked me to give a little spill about my work and thoughts on wedding announcements!

jacki miller photo+design_breanna_blog_0010

1. How did I get into stationary design?
So the very first wedding announcements I designed were my very own! I always wanted to give designing wedding announcements a try, so I thought “why not try designing my own?”. I had gone to college for photography and graphic design, so I did have a little experience with design. I went for it and ended up loving it. You can view my very first wedding announcement designs HERE. After that, I asked a few of my current brides if they were interested in having a custom designed announcement for their wedding for free. They all said yes:)I have been designing announcement for about 2 1/2 years now.

jacki miller photo+design_breanna_blog_0001

2. What is a day in the life of Jacki look like?
I wake up at about 7:30 a.m. every morning and check my emails. I try and email all my clients back within 24-48 hrs. Then if I’m feelin up to it, I go work out…(which may or may not happen on a rare occasion). Then I get started on all my projects! I work till about 5 or 6 everyday or until my husband comes home. Then we both try to do something fun after work. We will either go on a motorcycle ride, watch a movie, or go on a walk:)

jacki miller photo+design_breanna_blog_0002

3. How can beautiful wedding stationary and invitation make a difference for a bride?
Oh man, I LOVE getting a beautiful announcement in the mail! Who doesn’t, right? When I get a beautiful invitation that was well designed and put together, it gets me SOOO excited for their wedding. I feel that your wedding announcement is the first part of your wedding that your guests get to see! So why not have something designed that you absolutely LOVE!  I want my brides invites to get everyone excited for the best day of their lives:)

jacki miller photo+design_breanna_blog_0003

4. What is something I am loving recently? What inspires me?
I am in love with anything botanical or organic. If you look through my work, you will notice that I use a lot of florals and leaves with almost everything I do. My logo even has leaves in it! I am an outdoors gal, so anything that deals with mountains, gardens, or forests is right up my alley. These things also inspire my day to day design routine. One place I love to go to get some design inspiration is the mall! And not because I love to shop, haha, but because I love looking at all the signs, and windows in each store. I am always snapping pictures of coupons, window setups, and textures I see in stores. Anthropologie, H&M, Free People, and Lush always have great branding, setups and killer designs all over their stores.

5. What is my favorite part about owning a small business?  What is the most exciting part of what I do?
I LOVE being my own boss. I love picking my hours, and picking projects that I WANT to do. I used to take on every inquiry that came my way…BAD IDEA. I ended up hating half the projects I took on and felt like I wasn’t able to give a great final product 100% of the time to all my clients. I decided to only take on projects that I knew I would love doing, and knew I could do a killer job on. The most exciting part of what I do is getting to meet and work with AMAZING clients. Whether it’s other vendors in the wedding industry or brides themselves, I am loving each new client I bring on. When I receive an email or text saying how much they loved their paper details, that right there is my favorite part about designing. Getting to see the final product before anyone else is really exciting too:)

The design process  is incredible and I know with a gal like Jacki, it will be fun and enjoyable. She can create something completely unique to you that will reflect your wedding day! She is the girl that I am now referring everyone. (And will use for my own photography business stationary when I re-brand. But that is a “secret” project for now!)

As you are engaged and thinking about what stationary you need, here is a list of common items. Depending on your event, you might need a few of these or  you might need all of them.

-Save the Dates
-Invitations
-RSVP Inserts
-Ceremony Programs
-Escort Cards
-Table Numbers
-Dinner Menus
-Thank you Cards

When each of these items tie together, your theme and style of the day is emphasized for your guest to see and enjoy.

If you are looking for a talented designer for your own event, you need to check out Jacki’s website! (If you are not in Arizona, like me, don’t worry. You don’t have to be in the same location as your designer to have a successful relationship and communication!)

Everyone loves Katie and Brad. Including ME! These are two of the kindest people and you could tell that they are invested in the lives of those around them. Their day was beautiful and classic. I know talking about the weather isn’t the most trending topic, but this day was literally a photographers dream. It was a perfect overcast to create a giant soft box in the sky. I don’t think I have ever shot at the Bountiful LDS temple and had THIS great of weather.

Katie and Brad shared a formal session and first look before their wedding day. I am so glad that they choose to do a formal session because do to a few things they couldn’t control, the day was running late. When weddings days run late, it is often the photography time with the Bride and Groom that gets cut into. These are some of the most important photographs of the entire day. So it was wonderful to know that we had an entire formal session of beautiful images that they already had. Luckily, we shot quickly to get Brad and Katie so many beautiful images!

I love sharing a few “favorite things” on my blog every so often. Sometimes these are photography related, sometimes not. Today’s favorite thing isn’t necessarily photography related unless you factor that to be taken as a serious professional wedding photographer, you have to dress the part.  (Who wants their wedding photographer to show up to a wedding in a tee-shirt and jeans? No one.)

I am the type of person that gets a little bit overwhelmed in stores like Forever 21 and H&M.  Waiting in line to try on 5 items, seeing that they don’t fit so well, having to get dresses again, going to get new sizes, picking up something else, waiting another 15 minutes for a dressing room, changing all over again… After 2 stores, I am usually done.  I don’t have time for this.

So it shouldn’t be a big surprise now that I am not a big shopper. I will go look for a new shirt if I have something coming up, but have clothes in my closet that have been there for years and years. The yellow cardigan that I love…. yup, I have been wearing it for 7 years. SEVEN YEARS! I don’t think a knit cardigan was meant to be worn for almost a decade. Probably one of the reasons my husband wants me to toss it out and get something newer. (Really ask him about the Mustard Yellow Cardigan, we have talked about this several times.)

So Stitch Fix is a wonderful, god-sent solution for me.

StitchFixLogo

So what is Stitch Fix? What do they do?
Stitch Fix an online company of personal stylists that will put together a box of 5 items that they think you might like. They will ship it to you (free shipping). You try on the items. Keep what you want and send everything else back in a prepaid return bag.  All from the comforts of home.

How does your stylist know what you might want?
They simply ask you. When you go online to StitchFix.com, you will be asked to log in and create a style profile.  They don’t just ask what your sizing measurements are to help get a good fit. They ask about your life. What you do on a day to day base. They ask what you do for work and if you are a mom/pregnant. If you have Pinterest, you can link the URL to your “My ideal Wardrobe” board so they can see what are drawn to, even if you do not know how to describe it yourself.

StitchFixStyleProfile3
They even include images of different style types and ask you to rate how well you like each selection.

StitchFixStyleProfile2

You order a box and choose a day for it to be sent. I feel like Christmas when it shows up on my doorstep.

I had a bride this month ask my husband what I liked so she could send me a ‘thank you’ gift card after her wedding. (Kaela, you are the sweetest girl in the world. I adore you and Kai!) So I ordered a box this August just in time for “back to school”. Even though I am not a student anymore, I still love getting new clothes, freshly sharpened pencils and new organization materials at the brink of Fall with the rest of the school age kids.

So this is what my August Stitch Fix had in it just for me.

Stitch Fix-001__Breanna McKendrick Photography_Utah Wedding PhotographerStitch Fix-002__Breanna McKendrick Photography_Utah Wedding PhotographerStitch Fix-005__Breanna McKendrick Photography_Utah Wedding PhotographerStitch Fix-006__Breanna McKendrick Photography_Utah Wedding PhotographerStitch Fix-009__Breanna McKendrick Photography_Utah Wedding Photographer
Oh thank you stylist, I hope they look great on me too! Each stylist even write a little note why they think you will like each item. I think it shows something special when you get a personal and unique note directed just to you.

Stitch Fix-034__Breanna McKendrick Photography_Utah Wedding Photographer
They don’t just leave you after you get your clothes. If you get a shirt, you need to know what to wear it with. So your stylist puts together a few fashion cards to show at least 2 ways to wear each item in your box. In this last box I made a note that I wanted to try some new patterns that I don’t usually go for to try something new. So this box was filled with graphic stripes, color blocking and houndstooth.

I was racing the sunlight to take these pictures, and so yes, this dress is a little on the wrinkled side. It just came out of a box after all.

I am sure my neighbors think I am strange for standing on my porch, modeling clothes as my husband snapped these pictures.

So now I have until Saturday to choose what I want and what I want to send back.  I would love to hear which item(s) do you think I should keep. Comment below and I will let you all know which ones stay and which ones go. If you want your own stylist and Stitch Fix box sent to you, you can use this referral to Stitch Fix!
