The photography community in northern Utah is spectacular. I hear horror stories of young photographers trying to start in an area, but are snubbed out and excluded by all of the “experienced and established” photographers in the area. It becomes hard to learn, second shoot, and grow without a supportive community around you.  Some of my closest friends are photographers that I shoot with and want all new photographers to have a similar experience. Often times, photographers will get together to do what we do best. Yup, we get together for a shoot out!

What is a shoot out? Shoot outs have the energy of yearbook signing day in high school. They are days to get out from behind the computer and put our editing list down. We join with other photographers in the area, some are good friends, others I have only talked to on social media. A styled shoot is put together with a few models and local wedding vendors and we go to town. The sound of shutter clicks and girlish laughter just warms my soul.

Usually at my sessions, I am the only photographer. I do not have co-workers and only occasionally I have an assistant with me. The sessions run as I would have them, but when I get stuck or in a rut, there is no one around to suggest something new or fresh. To shoot next to someone to talk about specific lighting situations and lens choices is not only education, but exciting.  It pushes me to try harder when I have someone next to me that understands photography and has a passion to create beautiful art.

The Photo Fete is a small group of Utah wedding vendors that host these shoot outs. There are themes and details pulled together that help inspire us to try new things and attract our ideal clients. I have been blown away with how much work The Photo Fete has done on these events. Wedding cakes and desserts are made. Custom stationary pulled together. Florals, hair, makeup, table settings, etc. It truly embodies all the detail of a full wedding and is the perfect eye candy for any photographer.

I went this last week to The Photo Fete’s stylized wedding shoot out and wanted to share with you a little peek at some of the details. I will be sharing more on the blog soon so stay tuned and be sure to check out the wonderful local vendors who helped put this shoot together.

The trees were just growing into their full greens and everyone enjoyed the suns brilliant warmth. Nieces and nephews anxious let some of the energy go with little running bursts as parents watched with careful eyes making sure grass stains did not become apart of the newly bought wedding outfits.

Michelle was a perfect bride. She was a beautiful. She was classic. She was graceful. And the way Kevin held his new bride showed the whole room that he never wanted to let her go. These two had a celebration that all their family participated in and radiated love.  These two families know to make the world around them a beautiful and wonderful place.

Michelle and Kevin’s ceremony was intimate and small with close friends and family around them. Michelle and Kevin choose to incorporate their family members into their bridal party, which shows all the more how much family means to the both of them. The maid of honor and best man were their closest and best friends. I can only image the long conversations these two supports had with this bride and groom, as engagement became closer and closer.

I enjoyed being with Kevin and Michelle every moment and every session. I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to  work with a bride that trust you completely as a wedding photographer. I want to put my brides at ease that I will be there to photograph your wedding day moments. I cherish my couples and do all that I can to give them the best images I know how to give.

TODAY IS THE DAY! Katie and Brad is becoming husband and wife today! What better way to celebrate than to share their beautiful first look formal session at the elegant Utah State Capitol.

I first met Katie from being a church camp counselor. She was bubbly and FUN! I feel like everyone knows Katie and everyone LOVES Katie. Both Katie and Brad are invested in the lives of those they care about and no doubt will be surrounded by good friends and family for their wedding day! When I was going over the final timeline with Brad and Katie, even Brad mentioned how in the “friend” pictures, there might be 30+ of Katie’s closest friends.

There are people who make everyone around them feel happy and uplifted. Katie and Brad are two of those people. Troubles do not seem as significant and they light up the room with their smiles.

One of the best parts of shooting at the Utah State Capitol is being so close to Memory Grove Park. It is beautiful this time of year with greenery and roses all around. I think it matches perfectly with Katie and Brad’s elegant wedding.

The smell of roasting green chilies and the bright oranges and reds that dash a vibrant sunset take me back to New Mexico in a heart beat.  I think of all the wonderful friends that I have down there and so happy to have an excuse to come back. I have known Tanith since we were kids.  I was friends with her cousins, my older brother was the same age as her older sister, our parents were friends and we all went to the same church congregation together.

Tanith is one of the many gorgeous “cousins”.  There are 4 aunts that are all sisters, so all had beautiful girls around the same age. These girls grew up together, went to school together. Their definition of cousin has merged towards a relationship of sisters. They laugh and celebrate each of their successes, and cry with each other during the hard times of life.  They are a Disney-loving, jaw-dropping, contagious laughing group of girls.

Marrying into such a tight knit group of girls could be intimidating. But not for Eddie, he has a sense of humor that can keep up with this group.  With ease, he can make Tanith’s radiant smile appear (which makes her eyes and nose crinkle with laughter).  He is a strong and charming. From the friends and family that were there on the big day, you can tell Eddie has close and strong relationships that he invests in. Family means a lot to these two.

(PS- I loved their details of Tanith’s bouquet, their stationary and Eddies classic cufflinks)

These are a few of those fun cute cousins! Recognize a few of those faces from the blog? Aubry AND Aslyn are past Breanna McKendrick Brides. And Brianna had a lovely Anniversary session in California. These girls are all so beautiful! It is a treat to have them in front of my lens!

This is one of my favorites! (Secret, secret- it is going in my Wedding Bridal Guide that I am designing right now)

I enjoyed shooting with these two during the sunset, soaking in every last drop of light! There are so many changes in light happening so quickly, that it keeps me on my toes. From a brighter exposure, to silhouettes against a colored sky, to pulling out some off camera flash. Regardless of the photographer you hire for your wedding day, make sure they are equip to shoot in any kind of light, and use their photography knowledge to create the images that you want.  These last three images were all shot in about 5 minutes, but based on some style choices, they all turned out beautifully different.

Many of their friends and family were able to see this couple journey from friendship to tying the knot as husband and wife.t. This special day meant a lot to everyone that traveled this journey with the two of them. Everyone truly came together to celebrate.

Wedding Day Assistants
I have been blown away with how much Breanna McKendrick Photography has grown. I have loved getting to know my brides and celebrating with them. I am convinced that they are the sweetest, most sincere, and down right stunning brides in the world!

I have always wanted to give 150% to each of my brides on their wedding day. I do everything I can to make sure they get the BEST possible image that I can physically produce.

I realize this year, that I am able to do so much more when I have a wedding day assistant to be an extra set of hands and eyes for me!  I need someone to pay attention to details and help with gear and lighting so the day flows with ease.  So, Breanna McKendrick Photography is officially on the search for WEDDING DAY ASSISTANTS!

As an assistant, you will be asked to help:
– exchanging lenses
– managing my gear bag
– hold reflectors
– adjusting wedding gowns, getting details together, etc
– help gather family for pictures
– holding off camera flash lighting during darker receptions
– if able, shooting when needed

All assistants will be paid hourly. Wedding days are “Game Day”.  It is hard work and can come with lighting or weather challenges. But it is also tremendously rewarding to help capture the intimate moments of someone’s wedding. I am convinced it is the best job in the world!

Depending on your availability and my current bookings, you may be contacted to help several times a month, or just once. We can find a good balance that will work for both of us.

If you are interested in being a wedding day assistant, click below to fill out the contact and availability form, or email me at breanna@breannamckendrick.com.

Contact and Availability Form

I look forward from hearing from you!

Breanna McKendrick Photography is based out of SLC, Utah. All assistants must be available to provide their own travel to Salt Lake County or Utah County. Any destinations outside of this area will be handled individually.
