NEW
I do not know how I have not talked about first looks on my blog yet. So, lets get talking! But first, congrats to Kelsey and Seth who’s first look is featured all over this blog post, and a huge thanks to Winsor Photography for letting me come and celebrate with this couple! First looks are so much more fun with another photography friend!

Now, first looks, simply said, are AMAZING and are pretty simple to explain. A “First Look” session is where you let your photographer to create a wonderful environment to capture your groom seeing his girl all dressed up, as HIS bride,  for the first time. Sometimes these session occur in a “formal session” a few days/weeks before your wedding date. Sometimes these “sessions” occur just before  your ceremony on your actually wedding day. But either way, the main point is to allow your photographer to be there, in a quiet, secluded area with beautiful light, to capture the thing we want to see most- emotion and reaction!

As a bride, you feel so beautiful wearing a wedding dress for the first time and want to see the reaction of your man when he finally sees you as a bride!  There is nothing that can replace those moments of eager anticipation and excitement. But wait, allowing your groom to see yourself before the ceremony is bad ju-ju right?  It is un-traditional and might give grandmother a heart attack when she find out you are even thinking about it! But let me explain three main reasons why I LOVE first looks. And honestly,  you will be better served and get better images for your wedding by doing them!

1. You really get a chance to relax and soak in the moment.
Your wedding day may be one of the busiest days of your life! From the moment you wake up you are BUSY, getting ready with your hair and makeup, mom running back and forth looking for earrings, your sisters shoes, dads tux, etc. and that is just the morning. From the time after the ceremony, friends, family and loved ones want to come up and say their congrats and celebrate with you, guests are waiting on your during cocktail hour, wedding coordinators as constantly checking time and the clock. I feel rushed just thinking about it! Ironically enough, you do not even get a lot of time to talk to your new spouse!

It is wonderful to take a few moments after the getting ready, set aside in a secluded area with no one else but your photographer where you can just relax and breath. You do not have to  worry about having a 500 people wanting to talk to you or needing anything. First looks create a moment where the world and all your morning nerves have melted away.  From experience, every bride cannot wait to see his reaction. That is what this is all about! You want to see his face when he sees you for the first time AS HIS BRIDE! Grooms can be emotional with tears, laughter or just tender smiles, but whatever his reaction is, you really get the chance to focus on each other and let it all soak in!

2. More pictures!
Your  photography is a critical investment for your wedding day. You have spent time  and money in finding the photographer that fits your style and someone you trust to completely capture the memories of your day. When you do a first look, you get individual time and attention all to yourselves just for beautiful images!  It is a quick transition from the first look into some truly beautiful and romantic pictures together! The brides that opt for a first look session or a first look moment on their wedding day ends up with a SIGNIFICANT amount more of images to add to your albums and to have around your home. If you are already investing in quality photography for your wedding, wouldn’t you want to make the most of it and capture more of your day and your story?

3. Control of the environment. You know now how special it can be sharing a first look in an intimate place. But let me shed some light on the benefits strictly from a photographers perspective. The first things I look for during a wedding day is where the locations with the best light are! Without great light, it is REALLY hard to get beautiful images. The couples that choose to do first looks, not only get more images and a more complete album and story, we control WHERE we choose to do your first look.  I will get your groom all set in the perfect place with beautiful light to get the BEST quality of images. I cannot describe how difficult it can be to get capture a grooms reaction from the back of a dark church building, with strict photography limitations. It can restrict what images I can deliver to you. First looks allow the freedom to move where needed to really capture your and your grooms natural and sincere reactions.

If nothing else, LEARN FROM ME! When I was a bride preparing for my own wedding, I knew that I wanted to do a formal session before our wedding day. I did not have any hesitations about allowing Trevor to see me in my wedding dress before our ceremony, I wanted the additional images, save time doing so many bridal portraits on my wedding day itself and have more time celebrating! So we choose to do a separate session with our photographer, secluded all by ourselves, to capture some really beautiful images!  But what I did not think about was capturing the moment Trevor saw me for the first time on film! Oh how I regret this!!! I wish I could recall his face when I walked around the corner dressed up for the first time as his bride! Those moments are priceless and only happen once in a lifetime!

If you have any questions about fitting a first look into your timeline and wedding plans, please do not hesitate to ask your photographer. I am always thrilled when my brides want to do a first look and really try and help wherever I can to make it a reality!

Enjoy a few of my favorites from the rest of Kelsey and Seth’s first look session:

What a month it has been! I was shocked to have all three of my August brides to be natural red-headed girls! Today I am thrilled to share with you the second of three red headed weddings!

Haley and Daryn met through none other than Daryn’s sweet Grandmother.  Haley, as a hairstylist, was cutting Daryn’s grandmother hair.  She happened to mentioned her darling grandson that was single and  would love to met a gal like Haley!  Fast forward a bit and numbers were exchanged, which lead to a first date which led to a first kiss, which lead to a sweet engagement and a proposal in a Lamborghini- yes you heard that right, LAMBORGHINI.  These two seemed to have the puzzle pieces of fate and chance fall together in perfect timing.

Their wedding day was full of confidence and the couple was calm and classic. They shared their celebration with those that mattered most to them, and a celebration it was! There were gorgeous touches of rustic elegance, from the darling “Sweet as Pie” dessert table, birch wood vases for the table arrangements, and even a custom white dress for Haley.

This dress comes with quite a story. Most girls go out shopping for a dress and search high and low for the perfect one. Well, Haley found a dress that she adored, but over the months that she had it, decided that she wanted to change the look of it a little. So, with scissors in hand, she cut the dress right into two! This gal has guts and confidence! Her dress now gave her the flexibility she wanted to pair her full wedding skirt with unique tops to create a look all her own. (You can see her rustic theme come out when she paired her skirt with a green plaid shirt for her bridal session here!)

It was such a pleasure being with Haley and Daryn throughout their engagement, to get to know them as friends, and then celebrate with them on such a special day. Congrats to you both! I wish you many years of happiness and laughter!

I took Rachel and Ethan’s picture long before we set out to take their engagement pictures. Rachel was a former bridesmaid for Kylie’s wedding earlier this year. (You might recognize her in Kylie and Clay’s wedding blog post.) Rachel and her boyfriend Ethan were fun and full of celebration for their friends on their special wedding day. They danced almost every song played that night, and it was easy to tell that these two knew how to dance! Great dancers make it look so easy, but let me tell you from personal experience, it is NOT.  Trevor and I stumbled through our first dance as a couple, literally. Half way through our first dance, Trevor slipped on my dress and fell straight to the floor! Oh the memories! So all of you dancers out there, hats off to you! You have got talent!

You could just tell that Rachel and Ethan were full of energy and fun and by the end of the night, they had come up to me and told me that they *may* be planning a wedding in the near future, and asked for my card. It was not  long after that I got a message from Rachel saying that things were official and we began planning on where to do her bridals and engagements pictures. I was thrilled to shoot Rachel’s bridals at Wadley Farms, where the two will celebrate their wedding day late October. (This makes my heart especially happy because Trevor and I celebrated our wedding day two years ago!) You will not be seeing her lovely bridals on the blog for a few weeks as not to ruin the surprise for Ethan!

Their engagements were in American Fork Canyon, a place where Rachel and Ethan have been together many times before as a couple. They made the session special with lots of cheer and energy. As a last minute surprise, Ethan pulled out his guitar for a few shots! I love the way Ethan can serenade Rachel with his amazing musical talent. Bringing something special and sentimental to your engagement session is always welcome! It adds a little more love and significance to your images. I love when couples can interact together over something they share within their relationship!

I have known Chelsea for quite a few years now. We met at a church youth camp about 4 years ago. She was in one of my groups and I was one of her youth counselors. Little did I know that we would be celebrating together again on her wedding day! It was great to reconnect when she emailed me telling of her exciting news!  Seeing her change from a young girl in high school to a young woman preparing to get married made photographing her wedding that much more special to me. Her charming groom, Camilo, is truly an amazing and humble man. He came into Chelsea’s life, swept her off her feet, and before anyone knew it, the couple was planning the rest of their lives together. Knowing this couple personally, it is so easy to see how much Camilo adores his new bride and now wife.

Chelsea’s beautiful bouquet of calla lilies was special and touching. She included images of her dear friend and grandfather who had passed  away on the ribbon of the bouquets stems. I was truly touched by how much Chelsea wanted them to be with her in memory on this day and added such a special significance to her bouquet.

Chelsea and Camilo were married in the LDS Salt Lake Temple on a perfect morning with a reception at Castle Park in Lindon, UT.  I was touched to see so many of Chelsea and Camilo friends and loved ones there celebrating in their union and their love. Cheers to new Mr. and Mrs. I will treasure our friendship and am thrilled I was able to celebrate with you on such a significant day of your lives.

The last year of Breanna McKendrick Photography has been a roller coaster of learning and growing. There are days when I feel so overwhelmed trying to get the ideas in my head to translate to my workflow and images. Some of the best investments I have made this last years has been in my photography education!

I have been able to learn some amazing things from some of my “photography idols”. Two in particular stand out! Earlier this year I did a one on one mentoring workshop with Camilla Binks. I have followed her work religiously for years and was lucky enough to have her as my own wedding photographer! (You can see Trevor and I on her blog here!) That changed the way I shoot and create my images. She dedicated so much time into our session and gave me confidence to shoot in ANY situation, from the harsh sun of mid day noon to the dark and dim reception halls. It was truly an investment that gave me back ten-fold in knowledge.

The second photographer I have idolized and followed for years is Katelyn James. She lives back east in Richmond Virginia. This woman started her photography business in college and has built a brand  and audience of thousand of photographers and brides! Katelyn and her husband Michael are now a husband and wife team and run one of the most successful photography companies in the industry. These guys know the details of shooting weddings inside and out. (You would have to in order to shoot 42 weddings a year!) This last week I was one of the 11 lucky photographer to be in their home for 2 days and learn the in’s and out’s of wedding photography from this amazing couple. They have years of experience and were so willing to share it openly with each of us! She featured a bit about our workshop on her blog today which you can find here!  So worth the traveling and the humidity to be there and learn as friends!

I wanted to include some images from my most recent workshop with Katelyn James. I hope you enjoy and keep following along as Breanna McKendrick Photography will continue to grow!
